Trip Description

A gentle journey between Nepal and Bhutan Bhutan is often described as the land of happiness, but what stays with you is not a slogan. It is a feeling that settles slowly—a sense of balance shaped by mountains, faith, and a way of life that values enough over more. Hidden in the eastern Himalayas between India and China, Bhutan has protected its culture with patience, opening to the world only on its own terms. This journey connects the spiritual heart of Kathmandu with the quiet strength of Bhutan’s valleys and monasteries. You move between ancient stupas, forested mountain passes, fortress monasteries, and sacred cliffs. Life here follows the rhythm of prayer, seasons, and tradition. The result is a journey that feels simple, meaningful, and deeply grounding.

DAY 1 – Kathmandu to Paro, then Thimphu

Transfer to the airport in Kathmandu for your flight to Paro. The approach into Bhutan is unforgettable, with dramatic Himalayan peaks rising close to the aircraft before descending into a wide green valley. After arrival and immigration formalities, you are welcomed by your local guide and begin the drive to Thimphu. If your flight arrives before midday, stop at Kuensel Phodrang, also known as Buddha Point. From here, a giant seated Buddha overlooks the entire valley, offering wide views and a quiet moment of reflection. Continue to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Unlike most capitals, Thimphu feels calm and unhurried, blending traditional architecture with daily life. Settle into your hotel and enjoy your first evening in the kingdom. Full board. Overnight in Thimphu.

DAY 2 – Discovering Thimphu Valley

After breakfast, begin your exploration of Thimphu. Visit the Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the third King of Bhutan and deeply woven into the daily spiritual life of the city. Locals come here throughout the day to pray and walk slowly around the shrine. Continue to the Textile Museum, where traditional weaving techniques and regional patterns tell stories of identity and heritage. Visit the Zorig Chusum Institute, where students learn Bhutan’s thirteen traditional arts, including painting, wood carving, and sculpture. Later, discover the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, where ancient healing practices are still actively used today. End the afternoon at Tashichho Dzong, the impressive fortress that houses government offices and the throne room, as well as the summer residence of the monastic body. Before returning to your hotel, walk through the local Bhutanese market, where daily life unfolds among fresh produce, spices, and handmade goods. Full board. Overnight in Thimphu.

DAY 3 – Thimphu to Punakha

Depart early in the morning and drive toward Punakha, crossing the Dochula Pass at around 3,100 meters. On clear days, the pass reveals sweeping views of the eastern Himalayan range. The 108 chortens standing here create a peaceful and powerful atmosphere. Descend into warmer landscapes and visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in Bhutan, built in the seventeenth century and still active as a center of religious learning. Continue on foot through rice fields and small villages to reach Chimi Lhakhang, known as the temple of the Divine Madman. The walk offers a close look at village life, and the temple itself holds a special place in Bhutanese belief, especially for couples seeking blessings. Arrival in Punakha, once the capital of Bhutan, set at a lower altitude with a gentler climate. Full board. Overnight in Punakha.

DAY 4 – Punakha to Paro

After breakfast, begin the scenic drive back to Paro. Along the way, stop to visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse and gain insight into rural life and customs. In Paro, visit Ta Dzong, the former watchtower that now houses the National Museum. Its collection includes religious art, traditional weapons, textiles, and everyday objects that reflect Bhutan’s history and beliefs. Walk downhill to Rinpung Dzong, a striking fortress overlooking the valley. Inside, detailed wall paintings illustrate Buddhist teachings and legends. Later, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, built in the seventh century and closely linked to the arrival of Buddhism in the region. Full board. Overnight in Paro.

DAY 5 – Paro and the Tiger’s Nest

After breakfast, set out on the hike to Taktsang Monastery, known as the Tiger’s Nest. The trail climbs gradually through pine forest, offering changing views of the Paro Valley below. Perched nearly 900 meters above the valley floor, the monastery clings dramatically to a sheer cliff. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave that still lies at the heart of the complex. For many Bhutanese, visiting this site is a lifelong aspiration. After descending, enjoy free time to rest or explore Paro town at your own pace. Full board. Overnight in Paro.

DAY 6 – Paro to Kathmandu

Transfer to Paro Airport for your flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, meet your guide and begin exploring the historic heart of the city. Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, once the seat of Nepal’s royal power. Walk through courtyards, temples, and palaces, including the Taleju Temple, built by King Mahendra Malla. The square offers a vivid introduction to Newar architecture and Nepalese history. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 7 – Kathmandu and Departure

After breakfast, visit Swayambhunath, one of the most important Buddhist stupas in the world. According to legend, it was built more than two thousand years ago. The white dome and golden spire rise above the city, with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha painted in all four directions. From the hilltop, enjoy panoramic views across the Kathmandu Valley. Smaller shrines and temples surround the main stupa, creating a lively spiritual atmosphere where monks, pilgrims, and locals gather. Depending on your flight schedule, transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

🌤 Best Time to Travel

Bhutan is best visited from late September to November when skies are clear and mountain views are spectacular.

Spring from March to May also offers beautiful landscapes and blooming valleys.

Winter months bring colder temperatures but also peaceful travel conditions and clear mountain views.

🚗 Getting Around

Travel within Bhutan is mainly done by road. Because of the mountainous terrain, journeys between towns and valleys may take longer but are scenic and memorable.

Paro is home to Bhutan’s only international airport, and flights into the country are limited.

💰 Currency and Payments

The official currency of Bhutan is the Ngultrum (BTN), which has the same value as the Indian Rupee.

Cash is still the most practical payment method in many places, especially outside the main towns.

🏥 Health and Altitude

Bhutan’s elevation is high, and some travelers may feel altitude effects. It is recommended to acclimatize slowly and drink plenty of water.

🛕 Religion and Cultural Etiquette

Bhutan is deeply influenced by Buddhism, and monasteries and sacred sites play a central role in daily life.

Visitors should dress modestly and behave respectfully when visiting temples and religious sites.

🍲 Food and Dining

Bhutanese cuisine is warming and often spicy, with rice, vegetables, cheese, and chili-based dishes forming the heart of many meals.

🎒 What to Pack

Layered clothing is recommended for Bhutan as temperatures can vary between sunny days and cool evenings.

Comfortable walking shoes are also useful for monastery visits and hillside walks.

Travel Tip
Carry some local cash for small purchases and monastery visits where card payments may not be available.
